Brittny Beamish is an Environmental Scientist, graduate student in the Master of Arts in Disaster and Emergency Management program at Royal Roads University, and dedicated volunteer based in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Her career began with a Diploma in Conservation and Restoration Ecology and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Environmental Management from Lakeland College, laying the foundation for more than a decade of experience in environmental protection, regulatory compliance, and emergency response. She also holds professional designations with both the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists and the Alberta Institute of Agrology.
Currently working full-time as a Senior Environmental Advisor while completing her graduate studies, Brittny brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective to emergency management. Throughout her career, she has observed how fragmented planning can amplify the impacts of disasters on people, ecosystems, and communities. These experiences inspired her to pursue advanced studies in disaster and emergency management, with a focus on how socio-ecological considerations, diverse knowledge systems, and lived experiences can be better integrated into emergency management frameworks.
Brittny believes one of the greatest strengths in emergency management is the diversity of perspectives brought to the field. She encourages students and emerging professionals not to be discouraged by a lack of traditional emergency management experience, emphasizing that diverse skills, backgrounds, and lived experiences are valuable assets. She also highlights the importance of humility, curiosity, and compassion, noting that effective emergency management requires professionals to remain open to learning, collaborate across disciplines, and keep the people they serve at the centre of every decision.
Outside of work and school, Brittny volunteers with the Edmonton Regional Search and Rescue Association and the Canadian Land Reclamation Association, contributing to emergency response efforts and supporting the next generation of environmental professionals.
